Dame Iris Murdoch

Philosophe et romancière britannique (1919-1999)

Au cœur de sa pensée philosophique se trouve l’idée que l’homme est naturellement égoïste mais qu’il est possible d’apprendre à être moins centré sur soi-même grâce à la nature et à l’art.

Iris Murdoch studied at Oxford and Cambridge and was close friends with the philosophers Elizabeth Anscombe and Philippa Foot. Murdoch was for many years a fellow of St. Anne’s College, Oxford, where she taught philosophy.  In addition to two substantial books of philosophical essays, she also wrote twenty-six novels.  Her novel, The Sea, The Sea, won the Booker Prize in 1978.

Un biopic dans lequel Judi Dench et Kate Winslet incarnent Iris est sorti en 2001. A voir ou à revoir:

Starring Kate Winslet, Judi Dench, and Hugh Bonneville, Iris tells the story of celebrated English author Iris Murdoch. Iris first became known as a brilliant young scholar at Oxford whose boundless spirit dazzled those around her. Then, during her remarkable career as a novelist and philosopher, she continued to prove herself a woman ahead of her time. Even in later life, as age and illness robbed Iris of her remarkable gifts, nothing could diminish her immense influence or weaken the lifelong bond she shared with her devoted husband.
